RADIANTEC PACKAGES ARE PRE ENGINEERED to result in systems that are reliable, long lasting and efficient. Most customers will begin with a good solar domestic hot water heater as a point of departure and then add popular features like underfloor radiant heating, snow melting, root zone heating for the garden and pool heating. Cost benefit is best when there are multiple uses for the solar energy.

There is a need for design discipline. If you just put up a couple of solar panels and "do something", the results may not be very good. Dot the "I's and cross the "T"s. Do it right and consider a professional contractor who will have the tools and experience that can be very valuable.

OPERATION - The sun shines upon a solar collector and warms the antifreeze solution within. Whenever the solar controller senses that there is solar energy to be harvested, a small pump circulates the warm antifreeze to one or more heat exchangers and then back to the solar collectors to be reheated. The solar energy is transferred to the bottom of a solar domestic water heater or to another selected use. The pump will run either fast or slowly depending on the amount of solar energy available.

Heating tubes for underfloor radiant heating are added in parallel to the domestic hot water heat exchanger. Ordinarily, a concrete slab with compacted gravel beneath will serve as the solar energy storage. The great strength of the Solar Option One System is its efficiency (as defined by the net amount of solar energy that is harvested).

Radiantec's Solar Option I system combines solar domestic hot water production with the direct production of underfloor radiant heating. This direct production of underfloor radiant heat results in the highest possible solar collector efficiency because it enables the lowest possible solar collector temperatures. This design approach is a considerable breakthrough in solar energy design that has won numerous awards.

SOLAR OPTION II SYSTEM

Radiantec's Solar Option II is a combination of Radiantec's "Open Direct" heating system and a solar energy supplement. The "Open Direct" system uses the building's domestic hot water heater to make heat instead of a boiler of furnace.

Solar Option II is attractive because it is a more complete energy system that includes back up space heating and even some limited free cooling. The solar collection efficiency is very good but it does not quite match that of the Solar Option I because of the indirect production of underfloor radiant heat.

This is an attractive option for gardeners. The growing season can be extended by 3-4 weeks in the Spring and 2-3 weeks in the Fall. Warmer earth temperatures result in greater productivity.

SNOW MELTING FOR DRIVEWAYS AND WALKS

Plan for about $1/ft² for the slab materials.

POOL HEATING

You will need a large SST heat exchanger that will cost around $500.
